Payson Carter Benefield
On August 18, 2012 Rachel went in to the ER at Northwest Medical Center - Bentonville as a precaution after realizing that her baby of 35 weeks wasn't as active as he had been. She arrived to the ER at about 10:00 a.m. and was admitted to L&D (Labor & Delivery) at approximately 10:15 a.m. The nurses hooked her up to a fetal monitor to check on baby Payson. The monitor indicated that his heart rate was around 140 (good) with minimal variability (ominous sign). The nurses tried to stimulate baby Payson by giving Rachel peanut butter and apple juice and continued to monitor his heartbeat. At 10:34 a.m. less than (20) minutes after admission the fetal monitor strips indicated late decelerations (another ominous sign) of Payson's heart rate. At 10:37 a.m. the nurses informed the on-call doctor of the late decelerations and minimal variability. Payson's heart rate continued to decelerate steadily. This trend of deceleration lasted approximately ninety (90) minutes or more before the nurses in the L&D again contacted the on-call doctor to inform her of the alarming developments at or around 11:51 a.m. At or around 11:52 am, the nurses in the L&D then requested the on-call Doctor's presence at Rachel's bedside. However the doctor still failed to promptly respond to Rachel and Payson's immediate need for treatment. Finally at 12:28 p.m., nearly two (2) hours after first indications that his heart rate was decelerating, Payson was delivered via Cesarean Section without anesthesia. At the time of delivery, Payson was not breathing and was without a pulse. Other medical care professionals present at the time of delivery attempted to resuscitate Payson for approximately thirty (30) minutes, but they were ultimately unsuccessful. Payson was pronounced dead at approximately 12:58 p.m.
